Biography

Patricia Urquiola

BORN OVIEDO, SPAIN, 1961

A renowned Spanish designer and architect who lives and works in Milan, Urquiola creates furniture and interiors based on the fundamental principle that spaces and objects should be designed in relation to people. In work that is at once playful and poetic yet pragmatic and functional, Urquiola explores surprising possibilities of even the most traditional materials. Her unending curiosity, drive to innovate, and desire to create a new experience for the user defines Urquiola’s approach, and has produced collections of everything from furniture to lighting to bathroom fixtures that are unique in their unusual treatment of material, bold use of color, and sensuous, supple shapes

After studying Architecture at the Technical University of Madrid and at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Urquiola founded her own studio in 2001. Her work is in the collections of the world’s great museums of art and design, including the MoMA, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Victoria and Albert, and the Stedelijk. She has won numerous international accolades, including The Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes in Spain
