Rooted in the architectural poetics of his Vertical Series, Strain and Release continues Cwiek’s ongoing exploration of balance, pressure, and time through form. While its predecessors evoked the timeless gravitas of temple columns and ancient monoliths, this work reinterprets that lineage through a distinctly contemporary lens that is industrial, tactile, and charged with emotion
At its core, the work consists of a ceramic volume tightly encircled by a bent steel element. The metal band, simultaneously elegant and forceful, wraps the stoneware body in a gesture of restraint, compressing it until the surface yields. Subtle distortions emerge where clay meets steel, revealing a dialogue between strength and vulnerability, permanence and change. The marks left behind, softened scars and faint impressions, serve as physical memories of tension transformed, of structure under duress finding new equilibrium
A quiet illumination emanates from within the cubic form, as though holding the final trace of energy released after a long-held force. This faint, interior glow suggests a metaphysical dimension—a lingering echo of pressure, a residue of endurance
A meditation on resilience and transformation, Strain and Release is both grounded and ethereal, monumental and intimate, creating an exquisite tension between the the enduring solidity of architecture with the ephemeral fragility of human experience
