Named for Calypso, the sea nymph of Homer’s Odyssey who dwelled within a hidden grotto on the island of Ogygia, the Calipso Collection captures the mystery of a light source concealed within stone. Fanciullacci hand-sculpts each body to echo the raw, untamed form of a rock, as if carved by the same tides that once sheltered the nymph from the world above
Each work in the Calipso Collection houses two light sources that cast illumination both upward and downward, a dual emission that animates the piece’s rich texture and sculptural depth. Light moves across the faceted bronze surface the way it would across a cave wall, revealing hidden planes and shadowed recesses with every shift in perspective
Handcrafted in Italy, each body is cast in patinated bronze using the lost-wax casting technique. A plaster model is sculpted entirely by hand, from which a mold and wax models are made for casting. Once cast, the bronze is finished with a patina applied by brush, not as paint but as a natural reaction of acids upon the metal’s surface, allowing each work to carry its own textured, individual finish
Strictly in limited edition, Calipso transforms a myth of concealment and isolation into an object that invites light to escape from within stone
