Charlotte Culot & Hannah Vagedes
Born Uccle, Belgium 1964 & Born Bocholt, Germany, 1994
Founded by Charlotte Culot and Hannah Vagedes, Maison Rhizomes is a studio dedicated to transforming contemporary painting into the medium of hand-knotted rugs. Their journey began when Culot—long celebrated for her vibrant abstract paintings—sought to extend her artistic language beyond the canvas. After serendipitously meeting vagedes in 2019 in the Nepalese mountains, the two decided to join forces and created Maison Rhizomes in 2022
Inspired by Le Corbusier’s textile works and the expressive potential of weaving, the duo explored how painting could live on as textile, translating that visual vocabulary into something tactile, enduring, and inhabitable. Today, Maison Rhizomes carries this vision forward in collections that are a dialogue between contemporary art and the textile tradition
Each rug is crafted by master artisans in Nepal and India, using time-honored techniques and ethically sourced wool, silk, linen, and hemp. Limited in edition, the works stand at the intersection of art and design: collectible objects that preserve the depth of the original paintings while opening new ways of experiencing them
Culot was born in Belgium into a family of artists. After studying archaeology and art history, she turned to photography and finally to painting. Based in France, Her work on canvas, characterized by abstraction, color and texture, is exhibited internationally
Born into a Family legacy of yarn merchants that opened the world of textiles to her, Vagedes Studied business administration and worked as a luxury fashion director in luxury prior to Maison Rhizomes. Based in Berlin, she is driven by the philosophy that beauty and longevity are synonymous
