Hervé Langlais
Born Caen, France, 1964
Hervé Langlais is a Paris-based French architect and designer whose work stands at the crossroads of architecture and sculpture. After training at the Normandy School of Architecture, he worked alongside architect Paul Andreu for over fifteen years. Their collaborations include the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Roissy Airport, and numerous other landmark projects, an experience that instilled in him a lasting devotion to structure, proportion, and the precision of detail
From the scale of the building, Langlais gradually turned to interior architecture and then to the object itself. From 2012 to 2020, he served as artistic director of the Galerie Negropontes in Paris, where he created an annual collection of furniture and objects rooted in the tradition of French decorative arts. Each series explored a single theme and material, beginning with a collection conceived as an homage to Constantin Brancusi
His limited edition works are noted for their clean shapes, taut lines, and rare materials. Drawing on the legacy of modernist architects and sculptors such as Brancusi, Eduardo Chillida, Carlo Scarpa, Josep Lluís Sert, and Alvar Aalto, Langlais approaches each piece as a structure in its own right. He selects every material for its intrinsic qualities and elevates it through craftsmanship, revealing the texture of stone, the contrast of precious woods, the brilliance of brass, and the depth of lacquer. His designs balance elements of architecture and sculpture, of industry and craftsmanship, of brutality and elegance
His works are realized with renowned French workshops and master marble craftsmen in Italy, and have been presented at international fairs including PAD Paris, PAD London, and the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Alongside his collectible design practice, Langlais designs private interiors and scenography, bringing the same architectural rigor and sense of purity to every scale of his work
