JULIA CAPP & DENIS MONTEL

Born Gunnedah, Australia, 1964 & Born Levallois-Perret, France, 1967

Award-winning architects, and designers based in Paris, Capp and Montel believe that art and design should be in conversation with the context, culture, and time into which the work is born. By embracing context as well as custom and tradition, the pair delivers singular works that are coherent and contemporary. Working with an intuitive as well as conceptual approach, Capp and Montel strip away the superfluous to reveal the essential and the undeniable.

The unique character of each of their works is the result of pure lines, meticulous attention to detail, and supreme craftsmanship. A sense of empathy, openness, and listening are at the heart of their artistic approach, both in the way they allow materials to reveal themselves and in the deep collaborative relationships they have with the fine artisans with whom they work

Capp and Montel met at RDAI, the celebrated architecture, interior architecture, and design firm, founded in 1972 by Rena Dumas, which they now lead as managing and artistic directors, respectively. For their architecture and interior design work, Capp and Montel have received numerous accolades and have been featured in premiere design publications around the world. Their high-profile collaborations include residential interiors with Renzo Piano, a museum with Coldefy, and Hermès stores all over the world. Their limited-edition series of exquisite collectible designs is exclusively for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN

Capp graduated from the University of Queensland, Brisbane with a Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Design Studies and has an MBA from the Institut Français de la Mode, Paris. After working in Brisbane, London, Hong Kong and Shanghai, where she developed residential and commercial projects, she moved to Paris in 1998 to join RDAI

A graduate of the École d’Architecture Paris-La Défense, Montel began his career as an interdisciplinary artist, working across architecture, interior architecture, landscape, scenography, and strategic design. In 1999, he joined RDAI, where he forged his artistic partnership with Capp. He has taught at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and various architecture schools, and regularly takes part in international conferences
