MINDFUL OF NEW YORK CITY’S UNIQUE HISTORY AND CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT OF TRIBECA’S TEXTILE BUILDING, GALLERISTS NACHO POLO AND ROBERT ONUSKA HAVE REIMAGINED THE 7,000 SQUARE FOOT SPACE AT THE CORNER OF CHURCH AND LEONARD STREETS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF WORKS BY THE ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN REPRESENTS. THEY HAVE PERSONALLY DESIGNED EVERY DETAIL OF THE SENSORY JOURNEY, CONTEMPLATING AND SHAPING LIGHT, SIGHT, SOUND, AND TOUCH THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR. THE RESULT IS AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE THAT CONNECTS AESTHETICS AND EMOTION
.
STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN IS AN ART AND DESIGN GALLERY REPRESENTING CONTEMPORARY, ICONIC, LIMITED EDITION, AND COLLECTIBLE DESIGN ESTABLISHED IN MIAMI IN 2018. THE DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN REPRESENTS ARE PERSONALLY CURATED BY GALLERY FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR NACHO POLO AND DIRECTOR ROBERT ONUSKA, WHO ARE PASSIONATE COLLECTORS OF CONTEMPORARY ART. THEIR CURATORIAL PERSPECTIVE OF DESIGN, FURNITURE, LIGHTING, AND OBJECTS THEY PRESENT AT STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN MAY BE DESCRIBED AS TIMELESS, LUXURIOUS, AND MINIMALIST, YET IT DEFIES EASY CATEGORIZATION. CLIENTS WORLDWIDE COME TO STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN FOR EXCLUSIVE AND UNIQUE STATEMENT PIECES, ALL OF WHICH ARE MADE-TO-ORDER
FEBRUARY 15TH, 2024, STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN OPENED ITS NEW GLOBAL FLAGSHIP GALLERY IN AN ELEGANT, HISTORICALLY LANDMARKED BUILDING IN NEW YORK CITY’S TRIBECA NEIGHBORHOOD. KNOWN AS THE TEXTILE BUILDING, IT WAS DESIGNED IN 1901 IN NEO-RENAISSANCE STYLE BY HENRY J. HARDENBERGH, A PROLIFIC NEW YORK CITY ARCHITECT WHOSE HIGH-PROFILE WORKS INCLUDE THE DAKOTA ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE AND THE PLAZA HOTEL ON FIFTH AVENUE. THE BUILDING TAKES BEST ADVANTAGE OF ITS LOCATION AT THE CORNER OF CHURCH AND LEONARD STREETS. ITS CLASSICAL STONE FAÇADE IS WRAPPED AT STREET LEVEL WITH A SERIES OF EIGHT 16-FOOT-TALL WINDOWS, SUFFUSING THE 7,000 SQUARE FOOT GALLERY WITH BEAUTIFUL NATURAL LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE DAY. BEYOND LIGHT, THE WINDOWS PROVIDE A PERFECTLY FRAMED VIEW OF ARTIST ANISH KAPOOR’S FIRST PUBLIC SCULPTURE IN NEW YORK CITY. A VARIATION OF KAPOOR’S “CLOUD GATE”, THE “MINI BEAN” SCULPTURE’S SOFT ORGANIC SHAPE RESONATES WITH THE CURVED WALLS AND ARCHWAYS POLO AND ONUSKA HAVE CREATED INSIDE THE GALLERY AND ITS MIRRORED SURFACE OFFERS A REFLECTION OF THE GALLERY’S ELABORATE FAÇADE. THIS REMARKABLE SPACE HAS FURTHER SIGNIFICANT TIES TO CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AND CULTURE. IT IS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM HERZOG & DE MEURON’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED 56 LEONARD STREET, THE JENGA TOWER, AND WAS PREVIOUSLY HOME TO CHEF JEAN-GEORGES VONGERICHTEN’S NOUVEAU-CHINESE RESTAURANT 66, WHICH FEATURED INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE BY PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE-WINNING ARCHITECT RICHARD MEIER
THE BUILDING’S ELABORATELY CARVED FAÇADE, AND ITS STONE ENTRY STAIRCASE LEADING TO BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED ORIGINAL TRIPLE DOORS, SET THE TONE FOR WHAT CLIENTS OF STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN WILL EXPERIENCE INSIDE – A SPACE THAT IS SOPHISTICATED YET GENUINELY WELCOMING
DOUBLE-HEIGHT CEILINGS WRAPPED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED 16-FOOT WINDOWS ESTABLISH A MONUMENTAL SCALE THAT IS IDEAL TO SHOWCASE WORKS BY THE DESIGNERS AND ARTISTS STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN REPRESENTS. POLO AND ONUSKA HAVE SOFTENED THE INTERIORS WITH CURVED WALLS AND A ROTUNDA AS WELL AS A 12-FOOT ARCHWAY NEAR THE ENTRY FITTED WITH A CHESTNUT DOOR THAT WAS HAND-CARVED IN BEIRUT IN AN ORGANIC PATTERN OF DEEP HOLLOWS. THEY WORKED IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED FIRM L’OBSERVATOIRE, TO DESIGN CUSTOM LIGHTING TO CREATE A SENSUAL, MOODY ATMOSPHERE THAT ACCENTUATES THE INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE AND THE WORKS ON VIEW AS WELL AS THE HISTORIC FAÇADE
THE JOURNEY POLO AND ONUSKA HAVE SHAPED WITHIN THE GALLERY CONTINUES TO UNFOLD. A MASSIVE 7-FOOT BRONZE AND GLASS CHANDELIER APPEARS TO FLOAT EFFORTLESSLY ABOVE AN ORGANICALLY SHAPED DINING TABLE CRAFTED FROM RECLAIMED FRENCH OAK AND SANDED AND WAXED NATURAL BRONZE, CREATING A WELL-DEFINED SPACE FOR QUIET CONVERSATION. IT IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE SENSIBILITY POLO AND ONUSKA HAVE FOR BALANCING MONUMENTAL SCALE WITH A FEELING OF INTIMACY AND COMFORT. THEY ALSO CREATE MOMENTS OF SURPRISE – A RICHLY DETAILED SECRET LIBRARY CRAFTED IN CHESTNUT IS CONCEALED BEHIND A PAIR OF DISCREET DOORS; THE HAND-PLASTERED WALLS MORPH SEAMLESSLY TO INTEGRATE A TALL ARCHED FIREPLACE THAT EMITS A COZY GLOW. LAYERING ADDED DIMENSION AND OFFERING A PERSPECTIVE ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ART AND DESIGN, POLO AND ONUSKA INCORPORATE MUSEUM-SIZE WORKS FROM THEIR PERSONAL COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ART THROUGHOUT THE GALLERY. THE EXPERIENCE IS FURTHER ENHANCED BY THE SENSUAL AND SOOTHING PLAYLIST AND PROPRIETARY MUSIC CURATED BY DJ, MUSIC PRODUCER AND SONGWRITER MIA MORETTI ALONG WITH POLO AND ONUSKA
STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN FOLLOWS A PRIVATE, BY-APPOINTMENT-ONLY PROTOCOL THAT ALLOWS CLIENTS TO BE FULLY IMMERSED IN THE AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE AS THEY EXPLORE ART AND DESIGN OPTIONS WITH STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN
