JOHN ERIC BYERS

John Eric Byers

Born New York, USA, 1979

Known for the meticulous craftsmanship of his hand-carved, solid hardwood furniture and objects, Byers is a leading figure of a new generation of studio wood artists. Byers strives to use the purest, most universal textures and geometric shapes—the circle, square, rectangle, cylinder, ellipse, and sphere—which are densely patterned and rigorously carved. Mastering his uniquely original aesthetic over nearly four decades, Byers’ hand-made work is guided by purity in form, texture, structure, and respect for use of materials and is noted for its geometry, minimalism, emotionality, and refinement

The grandson of a carpenter, Byers trained in the workshop of Wendell Castle, the father of the art furniture movement. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Museum of Arts and Design
