CLIVE LONSTEIN

Clive Lonstein

Born South Africa, 1972

Known for his innovative approach to rich minimalist interiors and reductive architecture, Lonstein is an acclaimed designer, and architect based in New York. His work draws inspiration from an extensive library of materials and diverse influences, including travel, art, fashion, and nature. With a combination of architectural training and a background in fine art, Lonstein expertly blends form, color, and materials

Lonstein’s design expertise extends beyond interiors and architecture into custom furniture. His inaugural collection, exclusively for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN, includes a dining table, coffee tables, console tables, and side tables, with lamps to follow. His designs reflect his architectural philosophy: minimalist in form, yet rich in material, and effortlessly adaptable to a range of aesthetics—from traditional to contemporary, avant-garde to modern. These functional works of art offer a dynamic interplay of transparency, light, and geometric form, allowing each to transform with changing environments. As he continues to explore new directions in furniture design, Lonstein’s work remains anchored in his commitment to rich design that is as practical as it is beautiful

Lonstein received a Master of Architecture with distinction from Harvard University. Before founding his own firm, he served as Design Director for Studio Sofield, managing high-end projects for prestigious clients such as Gucci, YSL and Tom Ford, and was Vice President at Tiffany & Co., overseeing their global architecture and design studio

Glass

Exclusively for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN, Lonstein’s debut collection, Glass, introduces a refined approach to custom cast glass furniture. This collection of eight works, which includes a dining table, coffee tables, console tables, and side tables, is a carefully curated exploration of materiality, form, and function. Lonstein’s design philosophy is rooted in the idea of creating classic, durable pieces that resonate across different aesthetics

The organic quality, timeless durability, and versatility of glass allows each work to seamlessly enhance traditional, modern, and avant-garde spaces alike. Lonstein’s minimalist approach is evident throughout the collection, with simple yet substantial forms that elevate the everyday object. By working with glass in its purest state, he emphasizes the depth of the material, balancing simplicity with rich complexity

Drawing from his architectural background, Lonstein incorporates a sense of geometric precision in his designs. The collection features offset geometries, diagonals, zig-zags, and irregular shapes—elements that imbue the furniture with both architectural structure and organic fluidity. The works are designed not just to be visually striking but to create harmonious seating arrangements that contribute to a more connected space

Light also plays a crucial role in the collection, as Lonstein is captivated by the way glass interacts with its environment. This dynamic quality — the way surrounding conditions change the appearance of glass — adds depth and ensures that each piece remains engaging in any setting. In strictly limited edition, each work is made from thick, natural molten glass, ensuring longevity without the need for unnecessary embellishments
