A sculptural exploration of form, weight, and memory, the Maen collection by Massé draws conceptual and formal inspiration from the megalithic monuments of prehistoric Europe. Its name, derived from the Breton word for stone, anchors the series in a lineage of ancient architecture while proposing a new formal language in which historical resonance and sculptural clarity coexist. What distinguishes the collection is its ability to evoke permanence while inhabiting a contemporary vocabulary of abstraction and spatial rhythm
Composed of nine distinct pieces, Maen reimagines the elemental presence of monoliths and cairns, translating their archaic forms into objects of studied proportion and tension. At once massive and delicately poised, the volumes evoke the visual density of stone shaped by geological time. Reminiscent of eroded boulders or stacked dolmens, the works nonetheless feel vivid, dynamic, and original. Through deliberate imbalances, cantilevered planes, and unexpected superpositions, Massé introduces a calculated precariousness that challenges our perception of mass and gravity
Each work is handcrafted in France with technical precision and material nuance: wood and lacquer works by Atelier Racines and marble works by the artisans of Ateliers Saint-Jacques, each demonstrating a meticulous approach to fabrication. Whether rendered in bleached ash, black oak, matte or gloss lacquer, or rare marbles such as Breccia Botticelli and Estremoz white, the material choices deepen the dialogue between the archaic and the contemporary, the raw and the polished
Massé’s reinterpretation of prehistoric typologies resists nostalgia, reminding us that we can honor our ancestral lineage while innovating towards a future of greater possibility. In strictly limited edition of twelve, each work is both artifact and architecture, an invitation to reflect on the physical and symbolic presence of our most primal forms
