Cristian Branea

Born Transylvania, Romania, 1976

A self-taught designer, Branea is fascinated by materiality. From the expressive power of natural raw materials to the conceptual aspects of man-made, innovative engineered materials, Branea’s brand and products are driven by an obsession with the function, emotion, and narrative that various materials can produce. In the manufacturing process, Branea works with craftsmen and artisans from Transylvania, a region with a strong heritage of woodworking and craftsmanship. His designs have been distinguished with numerous international design awards in Italy, Singapore, Slovenia, and Romania

Branea created Materia Studio in 2014 as a design studio and manufacturing company. He studied contemporary philosophy, cultural studies, and has a Ph.D. in Political Ecology
