Dalí’s enduring fascination with the human body finds a direct and intimate expression in this sculptural Portlligat sunbed, conceived as both a place of rest and a figurative object. The original sunbed was created by Dalí in 1962 from olive tree wood for the home he shared with Gala in Portlligat, Costa Brava, where daily life, art, and landscape were deeply intertwined
This contemporary reproduction translates the original into iroko wood, selected for its resistance to variations in heat and moisture, making the piece suitable for outdoor use. Optional upholstery further extends its functionality while preserving the integrity of Dalí’s form. The sunbed is unmistakably anthropomorphic: its structure suggests a head, torso, ribcage, arms, hands, legs, and feet, transforming the reclining body into an object that both supports and mirrors the human figure
The visible wood grain and continuous construction emphasize the unity of the form, reinforcing the sense of a body assembled with deliberate clarity. At once sculptural and functional, the piece embodies Dalí’s ability to translate psychological and figurative concerns into domestic design, resulting in an object that is meaningfully arranged, sensorially engaging, and unmistakably Surrealist in spirit
