FINN JUHL

Finn Juhl

Born Frederiksberg, Denmark, 1912

One of the greatest furniture designers of the Twentieth Century, Juhl is widely considered a pioneering force in Danish Modernism. Trained as an architect and drawing on functionalist principles, Juhl created landmark buildings, interiors, and furniture that married clean, geometric lines with elements of handicraft and decorative arts. With graceful shapes and sensual curves, his expressive and sculptural pieces seem to be in conversation with great midcentury modern art without sacrificing utility. His prolific partnership with cabinetmaker Niels Vodder experimented with material and form to produce groundbreaking organic pieces that continue to feel utterly contemporary

After initially pursuing a career as an art historian, Juhl trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Art. As an interior designer, he created celebrated commissions for the United Nations, Scandinavian Airlines, and Georg Jensen. He also curated over sixty design exhibitions around the world, including exhibits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum
