NIKO KORONIS

Niko Koronis

Born Thessaloniki, Greece, 1973

A Greek Milan-based Architect and Product Designer, Koronis creates radically expressive minimalist furniture collections, often defined by geometric form. Daring in his use of materials, he undertakes long and delicate production processes to create beautifully crafted pieces of ‘small scale architectural entities.’ With this experimental approach and an encyclopedic design vocabulary, Koronis blurs the boundaries between nature and artifice, material and form, rigidity and play. His work has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Triennale di Milano

With Master’s degrees in Architecture and Product Design, as well as a Ph.D. in Architecture from the Architectural Association in London, Koronis has taught at universities around the world, including fellowships at Central Saint Martins and the Alvar Aalto Foundation

G Collection

The G Collection is an assortment of sculptural furniture in resin, that in order to better describe it, it is essential to explore two distinct yet interconnected aspects: its aesthetic foundation and the intricate production process behind each piece. Inspired by the architectural genius of Carlo Scarpa, who exhibited a mastery of simple geometric lines and the interaction between positive and negative volumes, the G Collection also pays homage to the earlier works of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose use of similar forms can be found in structures like the Taliesin West in Arizona, designed around 1939

At the core, the collection is a commitment to pure, simple lines and precise 90-degree angles. The initial piece, the GSD console, set the tone for the entire series, establishing a design language that prioritizes clarity and apparent simplicity. Resin, as a chosen medium, offers remarkable qualities that complement this aesthetic. Allowing for sharp angles and well-defined shapes, its capacity to refract and reflect light transforms how the pieces appear based on their environment. The 90 degree angles and the thin sections of resin are particularly captivating, with their translucent nature creating an enchanting interplay between light and form. As light filters through the material, the resin can shift dramatically in appearance—from a deep dark shade to a vibrant, luminous one—giving each piece a dynamic quality that feels both organic and alive

While resin can not be considered a natural material, like marble or wood for example, it possesses a distinctly natural ambiance when light interacts with it. This phenomenon embodies the collection’s commitment to a timeless elegance, inviting viewers to not only appreciate the design but to also engage with how each piece transforms under different lighting conditions. The aesthetics of the G Collection are not merely about visual appeal; they also invite tactile engagement. The polished surfaces of the resin pieces offer a clinical smoothness, while also conveying warmth and approachability. This inviting nature encourages touch and interaction, allowing viewers to experience the collection not just visually, but physically as well

The production of the G Collection is a meticulous, time-consuming and complex endeavor, undertaken by skilled artisans in the Netherlands. The artisans’ commitment to quality and precision reflects the intrinsic value of the G Collection, turning each item into a work of collectible design. In conclusion, the G Collection represents a profound exploration of light, form, and material, beautifully encapsulated in the partnership of aesthetic vision and skilled craftsmanship. It invites those who encounter it to appreciate both its artistic sensibilities and the intricate processes that breathe life into its design
