Abel Cárcamo
Born Santiago, Chile, 1990
Born in Chile and based in Paris, Cárcamo is a international artist with a penchant for seamlessly merging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Cárcamo’s artistic philosophy is deeply rooted in heritage artisanship, where hands-on techniques and a profound appreciation for materials like wood and bronze converge. His works blend contemporary trends with the rich history of traditional handicraft, resulting in sculptural works that exude both modernity and timelessness. Drawing inspiration from the unexpected connections between different stylistic periods, his works embody true craftsmanship while retaining a minimalist aesthetic. Each of Cárcamo’s works possesses a distinct character, with a symbolic quality that transcends space and time, reflecting his ability to imbue each with a life of its own, a sense of authenticity, and emotional resonance

David Cárcamo
Born Santiago, Chile, 1987
A chilean artist and architect with a passion for detail and traditional materials, Cárcamo combines ancestral methods of craftsmanship with a contemporary vision of architecture and design. Determined to preserve and highlight traditional trades, David works hand-in-hand with builders and craftsmen in his country. Based in Santiago and Paris, Cárcamo merges European and latin American cultural influences and construction techniques, enriching his practice and expanding his creative perspective. For each project, David seeks not only to create functional and aesthetically appealing spaces, but also to preserve the rich architectural and artisanal history of his native Chile
Descended from a family of carpenters, Cárcamo’s interest in wood, steel and raw materials began at an early age. As an architect, his work has been awarded by International Center for the Preservation of the Architectural Heritage. He collaborates with his brother, the celebrated artist Abel Cárcamo, on select works, available exclusively at studiotwentyseven

VANKO
For the he Cárcamo brothers, the VANKO collection is the culmination a process of re-learning and celebrating their identity and cultural heritage. Coming from Mapuche lands, they bore witness to how the rich history of indigenous people has been largely erased, and how, with the advance of society and the influx of new cultures, there’s a tendency to distance ourselves from our roots. For Abel and David, this erasure and distancing only served to highlight the importance of reconnecting with their heritage and preserving its traditions. During a trip to southern Chile, the brothers had the privilege of receiving a huanco, a wooden seat essential to Mapuche culture, used for gathering around the central fire in the ruca, the traditional house of the Mapuche community
That experience ignited a deep sense of connection to their roots and inspired them to embark on the journey of this collection. In the process of creating VANKO, they transformed the huanco, reimagining the the emptiness that supports its base into a solid geometric shape, giving rise to a series of large and small scale works. Their hands, saturated with plaster, became vessels of expression for the indigenous tradition, shaping each element with reverence and precision
The VANKO collection is a tangible manifestation of the brothers’ connection to the earth and to those who came before them. Each work is a reminder of their fundamental identity and a celebration of their heritage, a way to keep the rich Mapuche tradition alive in the present and for future generations.
