THE ANVIL SCULPTURE LAMP BY MAREK CWIEK EMERGES AS A STUDY IN ENDURANCE, ITS FORM DRAWN FROM THE LANGUAGE OF ERODED AND CARVED STONE. THE SILHOUETTE RESOLVES SLOWLY INTO AN ANVIL, A SHAPE THAT HAS ALWAYS STOOD FOR RESISTANCE, FOR MATTER THAT ABSORBS FORCE WITHOUT LOSING ITSELF

CWIEK TREATS THE WORK AS A RECORD OF PRESSURE OVER TIME. THE FORM READS AS THOUGH SHAPED BY REPEATED IMPACT, WORN AND STRUCK AND WEATHERED, YET STILL WHOLE. IT DOES NOT ILLUSTRATE THE ANVIL SO MUCH AS INHERIT ITS CHARACTER, TRANSLATING AN OBJECT OF LABOR INTO ONE OF QUIET SCULPTURAL AUTHORITY

MADE ENTIRELY FROM STONEWARE, THE SURFACE CARRIES TWO OPPOSING TREATMENTS OF THE SAME MATERIAL. DEEPLY CARVED, POROUS PASSAGES SIT AGAINST SMOOTHER PLANES, THE CONTRAST EVOKING THE WAY STONE WEATHERS UNEVENLY, SOFTENING IN SOME PLACES WHILE HARDENING IN OTHERS. THE RESULT FEELS EXCAVATED RATHER THAN MADE, AS IF THE PIECE HAD BEEN UNCOVERED RATHER THAN FORMED

LIGHT ENTERS THE COMPOSITION AS A QUIET STRUCTURAL FORCE. Marek Cwiek

Born Cieszyn, Poland, 1987

Polish-born artist Cwiek crafts striking stoneware sculptures that combine clean geometric forms with supple organic shapes. Boldly traversing historical periods and aesthetic vocabularies, Cwiek is inspired by sources as varied as the dynamic and energetic gestures of abstract expressionism, the ingenuity and craft of modernist industrial design, and the utilitarian minimalism of soviet brutalism. These influences infuse his work with a thrilling sense of tension, in which the soft, emotional, and natural stands in counterpoint to the hard, intellectual, and urban

In creating his raw, monolithic sculptures, Cwiek employs a minimalist approach in both aesthetic and technique to reveal the innate qualities of his materials. working primarily in high-temperature clay, he develops his own finishes and glazes to ensure perfection in the textural life of each work. Showing the craftsmanship and imagination of a true artist, each sculpture is one-a-kind and is exclusive to STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN

Cwiek’s enthusiasm for historical modes and his belief that shape is story was informed by his study of the history of language at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. A self taught artist, he began sculpting and painting in 2005. Cwiek currently lives and works in Malaga, Spain
