Exclusively for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN, the Capella Sconce by Jan Garncarek was conceived through an intimate engagement with the weight, density, and noble restraint of brass. Protective, resolute, and quietly ceremonial, Capella asserts itself on the wall with the composed authority of an object meant to endure
Its form draws from the silhouette of a knight’s shield. historically mounted as both defense and declaration, Here the shield is softened, abstracted, and illuminated. What once deflected force now gathers light. The sconce reads as a luminous breastplate, translating the language of armor into one of shelter and presence rather than confrontation
Curvature is central to Capella’s expression. Gently convex and precisely controlled, the form recalls the sculptural sensibility of mid-century Italian architecture and sculpture, where mass and elegance were held in careful balance. The arc of the brass surface echoes the logic of that period’s facades and reliefs, shaped by proportion, gravity, and material honesty rather than ornament. This lineage is deeply personal, serving as a tribute to Garncarek’s great-grandfather, an architect of Italian origin, and to a family history shaped by building, craft, and enduring form
Handcrafted in Poland, Capella exists at the threshold between sculpture and lighting. Light does not dominate, but activates the work with restraint, skimming softly across the matte brass surface and revealing its curvature through reflection and shadow. The glow feels contained and deliberate, reinforcing a sense of protection and composure. In this way, Capella becomes a quietly luminous altar to strength, memory, and perseverance
