GILDAS BERTHELOT

Gildas Berthelot

Born Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, france, 1961

A French born artist based in Montreal, Berthelot’s work is rooted in the storied craft of fine cabinetry, adapting heritage craftsmanship to create contemporary, organic sculptures that erase the boundaries between art and design. Designing and crafting each work by hand in his Montreal atelier, Berthelot draws upon the cabinet-making techniques he learned from his father and a singular artistic vision that reveals an extraordinary sensitivity to the sublimity of the natural world. With astounding attention to detail, Berthelot displays technical prowess, ingenuity, and artistic creativity in each work. His sculptures take on a life of their own, becoming imaginary creatures that seem to breathe, infusing any space with wonder and vivacity

Berthelot is a graduate in Visual Arts from both the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Quebec University in Montreal. His work has been featured at premiere international fairs, including Salon Art+Design in New York, Masterpiece Art Fair in London, design Miami, and the PAD in London and Paris, and is in the permanent collections of Quebec’s Fine Art Museum. His groundbreaking lighting collection, Réflexion, is exclusive to studiotwentyseven

Réflexion Collection

Exclusively for studiotwentyseven, the Réflexion Collection explores berthelot’s fascination with the undeniable elements of the natural world. Not the ephemeral and delicate beauty of flora and fauna, but the truth that remains with the relentless march of time: Barren landscapes, sun-bleached skeletons, weightless bones, the mystery of the horizon line. The essential qualities of these timeless forms is the interplay between time and light. Berthelot has reimagined those palimpsests of the natural world into functional lighting sculptures that play with the very notion of reflection — what is returned to us — and the abyss — that from which there is no return

Through a rigorous design process that involves scraping and sanding to reveal weightless volumes, berthelot has created transcendent works in which Form and light disrupt, interact, and complement each other. In strictly limited edition, each sculpture is hand crafted in maple with an oil finish
