Her Legacy is a deeply considered body of work through which Azulay reclaims and rearticulates a cultural lineage long subjected to erasure. At its center is a singular image: the El-Keswa El-Kbira, a traditional Moroccan wedding dress worn by the artist’s great aunt. This garment, preserved only in a family photograph and memory, serves as a visual and emotional anchor for a sustained investigation into identity, dignity, and inherited silence
Through textile assemblage and repurposed materials, Azulay translates personal history into visual form. Each work serves as an act of restoration, not of the dress itself, but of what it represents: the visibility of Sephardic Heritage within broader Jewish narratives that have often rendered it peripheral. Growing up in Israel during a period of heightened intra-Jewish tension, Azulay experienced firsthand the social pressures that demanded cultural suppression for the sake of assimilation
Now based in New York, Azulay approaches this reclamation from a position of distance, but also of clarity. Informed by years of self-inquiry and diasporic experience, Her Legacy stands as a distinct, formal meditation on cultural survival
