BENJAMIN FOUCAUD

Benjamin Foucaud

Born Amiens, France, 1980

A French designer and craftsman, Foucaud is determined to listen to his unconscious more than his logic. Drawing inspiration from his dreams and inner journeys, he creates spontaneous, surreal, adventurous, and radical designs that celebrate unorthodox paths, freedom and true self

Trained as a cabinet maker, Foucaud primarily uses traditional techniques and centuries-old manual tools to deliver unique and sculptural pieces, wood becomes rich or humble, rough or sophisticated, simple or surprising. In his design process, he engages like a sculptor in hand-to-hand combat with wood and the different materials he uses, giving idiosyncratic character to every piece in his handcrafted collections, in limited editions and exclusive pieces for STUDIOTWENTYSEVEN, which seem to defy categorization

Born in Amiens, France, he pursued a career as a Creative Director in digital before devoting himself to the design and manufacture of unique and high-end furniture for clients such as Wes Anderson. His work has been featured in premier design publications around the world, including Vogue France

FROM A BOARD

In his “From a Board” sculpture series, foucaud seeks solace from the chaos of contemporary life, returning us to our fundamental humanity and authenticity through the primal act of creation. The sculptures are a deliberate departure from the muddle of beliefs, violence, and lies that plague us. It’s a quest for beauty before language, before divisive societal constructs. It is a return to the simplicity of creation and a raw connection with honest materials. Creating a refuge from a reductive and polarizing age that estranges us from each other and ourselves, foucaud yearns to rediscover the essence of the human soul: WE hunger for beauty in simplicity and are nourished by the touch of a hand

Each work in the series undergoes a meticulous crafting process rooted in simplicity and ancient techniques. Foucaud selects unremarkable boards, not for their immediate beauty but for their latent promise. Employing basic tools—axe, chisels, planes, and scrapers—he sculpts the board with a delicate touch, achieving a precarious balance that allows it to stand upright. The process is an intimate dance with the wood’s fibers, a sensory exploration of fragility and strength. After carving, each board is left to dry, allowing air and time to shape it organically. The surface is then meticulously polished using natural abrasives, transcending irregularities until it becomes smoother than skin. The application of traditional French polish, layer by layer, reveals the inherent beauty of the wood fibers. Finally, each piece is named, reflecting its unique essence

The “From a Board” series invites us to witness not just sculptures but the hands that shaped them, reminding us that through time and touch the beauty of the human spirit is revealed. Each handcrafted work is unique and is exclusively for studiotwentyseven
