HERVÉ LANGLAIS

Hervé Langlais

Born Caen, France, 1964

Hervé Langlais is a French architect and designer. After training at the Normandy School of Architecture, he worked with architect Paul Andreu for over fifteen years. Their collaborations include the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Roissy Airport, and numerous other high-profile projects. As an independent designer, his limited edition works are noted for their clean shapes, attention to detail, and rare materials. His designs balance elements of architecture and sculpture, of industry and craftsmanship, of brutality and elegance

In 2012, Langlais co-founded the Galerie Negropontes in Paris, where he designs an annual furniture and object collection rooted in the tradition of French decorative arts

COB

A masterful exploration of balance and materiality, the Cob collection achieves a rare equilibrium between density and lightness, permanence and fluidity. The works possess a monumental presence yet are imbued with a sense of movement and grace. Designed  by Langlais as a dialogue between the organic warmth of American walnut and the luminous elegance of Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble, the series comprises four sculptural pieces—a bench, a console, a mirror, and a lamp—each embodying a union of elemental forces: the mineral and the vegetal

Each work explores the interplay between those organic materials and bold geometric forms. Massive cylindrical legs of walnut support marble seats or tabletops with a sublime sense of effortlessness despite the density of the materials. The mirror, a centerpiece of the collection, balances a monumental scale with delicacy of construction. At the junctions where wood and marble meet, subtle undulations—a barely perceptible ripple—imbue the works with a sense of vitality, as if the materials are in a spontaneous pas de deux, responding to one another in real time

Those simple, pure forms allow us to see anew the intrinsic qualities of the materials: the understated opulence of The Calacatta Macchia Vecchia marble and the tactile warmth of American walnut. This harmony of textures and tones is further accentuated by ingenious craftsmanship: no nails, screws, or glue disrupt the seamless connections between elements. The marble is handcrafted in Italy, drawing from centuries of expertise in working with stone, while the walnut components are handcrafted in France, following in a storied heritage of fine woodworking

An timeless convergence of noble materials, heritage craftsmanship, and innovative concept, the Cob collection is exclusively for Studiotwentyseven and is in strictly limited edition
