The Hasta Pendant Lamp marks the origin of Garncarek’s lighting practice, carrying with it a narrative that is both deeply personal and quietly archetypal. Conceived as Garncarek’s first lamp, Hasta draws from early memories and inherited symbols, translating them into a restrained, sculptural form
The design is rooted in white weapons—a traditional term for bladed arms such as swords, spears, and daggers—which populated Garncarek’s childhood home as objects of heritage, ritual, and symbolic vigilance. One particular episode became foundational: a childhood evening at his grandfather’s house, interrupted by a burglar alarm nearby. In response, Garncarek’s grandfather took up a sword and stepped out to confront the unknown. Though nothing came of the encounter, the image lingered: a gesture of readiness, protection, and resolve
Hasta channels this memory into the abstracted form of a spear, one of humanity’s oldest symbols of defense. The lamp does not function as a weapon, nor does it suggest threat. Instead, it embodies the idea of preparedness and symbolic protection. Its elongated element is deliberately fixed, emphasizing presence over function and meaning over utility. The form stands upright and composed, less an instrument to be used than a sign to be read
Handcrafted in Poland, Hasta establishes many of the themes that have continued throughout Garncarek’s work: memory embedded in material, symbolism distilled into geometry, and objects that operate as emotional markers within space
